Traditional end of Term and Year. Last Wednesday, 6th November 2024. Organised and run by the inspired incoming Executive for 2025. Undergraduates & Staff informally mingle between 5 and 7 pm. Gear present at 4:30 pm and food started to sizzle from 4:58 pm. Served the stragglers continuously to 6:30 pm. BBQ attracted the 6 pm crowd from their last lecture in G24 or G25.
2 | SPEED DATING | |
Normally, I pop over to campus a few hours before the main event to acclimatise and quickly catch up with some Staff and people in the Elsoc Common Room. Instead of sharing thoughts, words and images in a 5-10 minute conversation, it all flashed by within 60 to 120 seconds. Nobody was missed. Even the Head of School, made time for a face to face session as other staff popped in and out doing 'ElecEng business'. The 2025 Elsoc Exec were interviewing candidates for new year's Director positions in the Common Room.
3 | BENCH MARKING | |
You may recall this is the process of measuring products, services, and processes against those of organizations known to be leaders in one or more aspects of their operations. If I mention "Intel 8086" from 1976 and it's descendants down to the "Intel Pentium" (i586) from 1993, you'll automatically know about bench marking motherboards with unique chip sets. These were exciting but frustrating days of the 1980's when you grew up on a stable Motorola architecture in ElecEng. Nowadays, you can lookup a site such as, Versus, to choose a bench marked motherboard. //https://versus.com/en/motherboard

At the BBQ, we found out that a 3 hour lecture was given to all ElecEng staff in the morning by the invited visitor from the Imperial College in London. In the afternoon, 'the lecturing inspector' asked questions about the work and procedures from anyone in their room as he walked around the building. Overall, he was happy with everything and mentioned ElecEng was "well placed towards the next 5-year accreditation." I'm told by the Head of School more will be shared.
